Washington Commanders settle on new starting quarterback for now

During an interview, Ron Rivera announces which quarterback is expected to start for the Washington Commanders next season.

Last season did not go as hoped for the Washington Commanders. With a record of 8-8-1, the team from the capital city just missed out on making the playoffs.

Now, in an interview with the “NFL Network”, head coach Ron Rivera reveals that there could be some changes at the quarterback position with a view to the coming season. For example, the 61-year-old plans to go into the first training camps with young playmaker Sam Howell as the starting quarterback.

“It’s likely he’ll be our QB1. He’s definitely capable of it – we believe that and we know that. And then we’ll see what happens,” Rivera said.

That leaves – as of now – the two veteran quarterbacks around Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinecke out in the cold in Washington.

Howell was drafted in the fifth round by the Washington Commanders in 2022 and took the field in Week 18 last season. He scored one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown in the process.
