Washington Commanders award franchise tag to defensive tackle Daron Payne

The Washington Commanders are the first franchise to franchise tag a player for the 2023 season, keeping him on the roster. Defensive tackle Daron Payne will thus continue to suit up in his sixth year in the NFL for the team that selected him with the 13th pick in 2018

The first franchise tag for the 2023 season has been assigned.

As “ESPN” insider Adam Schefter reports, the Washington Commanders have retained defensive tackle Daron Payne for the upcoming season. Under the franchise tag, the 25-year-old will earn $18.937 million as it currently stands.

Payne was selected by Washington in the first round with the 13th pick in the 2018 draft and played under the fifth-year option within his rookie deal last season.

The “Big Man” also participated in the 2023 Pro Bowl as a replacement for injured Rams star Aaron Donald.
