This offseason, the Patriots once again had to report a departure in the coaching staff. Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels left the Patriots to take over the vacant head coaching position with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Patriots did not fill offensive coordinator position

The Patriots’ de-facto general manager Bill Belichick reacted to the loss of McDaniels in a very unusual way, declaring he would not fill the offensive coordinator position next season. Instead, Joe Judge, who was dismissed by the New York Giants, was hired as offensive assistant in February.

Now the second step followed and former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia was hired by the Patriots in a changed role. Along with Judge, Patricia is expected to take on a key role in the Pats’ offence. Last year, the former Patriots defensive coordinator was still serving as a consultant in New England.

Belichick is confident in Patricia

The move to add the more defensive-minded Patricia to the offensive coaching staff is surprising. But Belichick left no doubt about his decision.
