NFL: Washington advance – Coleman and St. Brown go head-to-head

For the first time in 19 years, the Washington Commanders have won a playoff game, setting up a duel between two German-Americans in the NFL. The team from the US capital, with rookie Brandon Coleman from Berlin, beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 in dramatic fashion on Sunday night. Now they will face the Detroit Lions and star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in the quarter-finals.

Kicker Zane Gonzalez made a field goal from 37 yards out with seconds left on the clock to give the Commanders the lead, with the ball luckily bouncing off the post. Since Washington, as the lowest-seeded team (6), had advanced to the Wild Card Round of the National Football Conference (NFC), they will now face the number one Detroit. The Lions had earned a first-round bye in the regular season.

The Philadelphia Eagles lived up to their role as favorites and knocked out the Green Bay Packers 22-10. The team around quarterback Jalen Hurts will face the winner of the clash between the LA Rams and the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional playoffs.

Washington’s last playoff win came in the 2005/06 season (when they were still known as the Redskins), when they also beat the Buccaneers. Now, the team, led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, has broken the spell. “We’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, I’m just happy for the fans,” said Daniels.

Left tackle Coleman (24) was in the starting lineup for his playoff debut. The team will face the highly favored Lions on Sunday night. The Divisional Round at a glance:
