NFL – Tampa Bay Buccaneers announce two long-term contract extensions

Todd Bowles and Jason Licht have been writing a success story with the Tampa Buccaneers for several years. The head coach and general manager are now being rewarded for their efforts.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made two important decisions for the future, focusing on continuity. The Florida franchise announced that head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Jason Licht have signed multi-year contracts.

Both have been rewarded for their successful work in recent years. Most recently, the Bucs reached the playoffs five years in a row, winning the division title in each of the past four seasons in the admittedly struggling NFC South.

Licht has been working as GM for the team since 2014. According to the club, the 54-year-old brought 40 of the 50 starters from the past two years to Tampa via the draft or as undrafted free agents. Of the 38 players he drafted in the first six rounds between 2019 and 2024, all were on one of the 32 rosters last NFL season.

Bucs retain head coach Bowles: Only Arians got off to a better start

Bowles took over as head coach in 2022 following the retirement of Bruce Arians and led the Buccaneers to three consecutive division titles as their first head coach. He previously served as defensive coordinator for three years and, like Licht, played his part in the Super Bowl triumph in February 2021.

According to ESPN, the 61-year-old has extended his contract for three years and will remain on the sidelines until 2028 if he fulfills his contract. According to the Buccaneers, Bowles’ 27 wins in his first three seasons were surpassed only by Arians, who racked up 31. His 10-2 record in December and January games over the past two seasons is also highlighted.

The club also mentions that since Bowles’ arrival as DC in 2019, the team has posted league-best figures in rushing yards allowed per game (93.8), yards per rushing play (4.0) and fumble recoveries (68). Since then, the Bucs have allowed their opponents 20 or fewer points in 45 games.

New contract for Bucs GM Licht: “One of the best talent scouts in the NFL”

“Jason has developed into one of the best talent scouts and general managers in the NFL, while Todd has led us to three consecutive division titles and is one of the league’s leading defensive minds,” franchise owner Joel Glazer is quoted as saying: “Under their leadership, we will work toward another championship.”

Both Licht and Bowles thanked the Glazer family and emphasized that they look forward to continuing to work with each other.

The GM wants to continue the shared mission of “finding and developing talented players and winning more championships for our great fans.” Meanwhile, the head coach plans to build on the success achieved so far and strive for “even bigger and better goals.”
