The majority of Washington Commanders fans still don’t like the new team name. But a return to the problematic old name is only an option for very few
The NFL franchise from Washington has been known as the Washington Commanders since 2022. But according to a survey by the “Washington Post”, the name has met with little approval from fans of the NFL and even their own team.
54 percent of sports fans in Washington would “dislike or hate” the name. Among self-identified fans of the Commanders, as many as 58 percent said the same.
A return to the old name “Washington Redskins”, which the team bore from 1937 to 2019, is not an option for the vast majority: only 17% would like to see this happen.
But is there even a chance of a name change?
Wife of the owner: more important tasks than renaming
On Wednesday, Marjorie Harris, wife of majority owner Josh Harris, rejected a quick name change, according to “NBC Sport Washington”.
“Everyone has an opinion on the name. Some are for it, some are against it, some are in the middle. And I think we’ve got a lot of work to do, so the name issue is on the back burner until we can get things going,” Harris said. “And I mean, honestly, I was out in Washington for a whole day and I kept referring to the team as the Commanders, and you know what? That sounds pretty good to me. So, for now, it’s the Commanders. “
