NFL: Parallels to Peyton Manning? Denver Broncos see a chance to sign Rodgers

After the signing of new head coach Nathaniel Hackett, fans in the Denver Broncos camp are dreaming of the big time and the signing of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In view of the current squad, some experts see parallels to the era under franchise legend Peyton Manning.

Munich/Denver – After three overall disappointing years under head coach Vic Fangio, a new era is dawning for the Denver Broncos. Nathaniel Hackett, the former offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, will take over the helm of the 2015 Super Bowl champions.

At his presentation, the 42-year-old spoke of a “dream” that is coming true.

It is precisely those dreams that the signing of the new coach triggers around the franchise. And, as in the previous offseason, the name of quarterback Aaron Rodgers is once again circulating around the Colorado franchise and making the hearts of the fan community beat faster.

The rumours took on such proportions that general manager George Paton directly dispelled them. Hackett’s signing had “absolutely nothing” to do with Rodgers.

At least for the time being, a clear no from the Broncos. Even if the story reminds some within the franchise of the last big coup at the quarterback position.

Rodgers to Broncos: parallels to Manning signing?

It’s all a show by Paton to keep the peace and give the new head coach a chance to adjust to the new environment? Behind the scenes, however, planning is going on unnoticed to realise the really big coup and reunite Rodgers and his ex-coach? Rumour has it.

According to Sports Illustrated, the Broncos find themselves in a situation “not unlike the glory days of Peyton Manning and the 2012 team”.

In addition to the Hackett signing, who has been recommended and lavishly touted by Rodgers in the past, Denver also beckons with a young, potent team that lacks, above all, a real leader to take the next step: finally making the playoffs again – which they did last time they won the title.

With receivers Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Tim Patrick and K.J. Hamler, tight end Noah Fant and running back Javonte Williams, to name just a few, the roster features plenty of up-and-coming talent at the skill positions on offense. And on the other side of the ball, the squad also features an emerging young talent at cornerback in Patrick Surtain II and a promising young edge rusher in Bradley Chubb.

Enough to convince “A-Rod” to switch? Probably not enough yet, as Rodgers is also tying his future in Green Bay to the prospects of one of his key teammates.

Rodgers only double-teamed with Davante Adams?

The 38-year-old has already made it clear that the contract situation of his favourite receiver Davante Adams is not insignificant for the decision about his future in Green Bay and in the NFL in general. A decision, however, should be made soon, at least as far as he is concerned.

“I think even sooner than March,” Rodgers explained on the “Pat McAfee Show” when asked when he would make a decision on whether or not to retire: “I want to be respectful – again – to the organisation.”

However, due to acute cap problems, it will be almost impossible for the franchise to provide its star receiver with the monster contract to match, while also keeping the star quarterback happy.

Adams’ contract expires this year. Speculation about the use of the franchise tag is doing the rounds – which is not going down well at all in the player camp.

“I think the biggest decision is obviously going to be Davante and his future with the team. There’s still this thing called the franchise tag and I don’t think number 17 wants that. No player ever wants to get the franchise tag,” Rodgers classified the speculation.

According to “Spotrac”, the Broncos, with a cap space of just over 40 million dollars, would at least have considerably more financial possibilities than the Packers to lure one or even both stars away from Wisconsin.
