The Chicago Bears mourn the death of their owner Virginia Halas McCaskey.
Virginia Halas McCaskey passed away at the age of 102. She was the owner of the Chicago Bears on paper until her death.
The franchise has officially confirmed Halas McCaskey’s death on social media. There is no official statement from the NFL team yet.
Halas McCaskey was the daughter of Bears founder and franchise icon George S. Halas, who passed away in 1983.
Upon her father’s death, Halas McCaskey became the owner of the franchise – making her one of the few women in sports to hold such an influential position.
It is not yet known exactly how the Bears’ ownership will be structured in the future.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released an emotional statement: “Virginia Halas McCaskey, the matriarch of the Chicago Bears and daughter of NFL founder George Halas, leaves a legacy of class, dignity and humanity. Faith, family and football – in that order – were her guiding stars, and she lived by the simple motto of always doing the right thing. The Bears, her father’s creation, meant everything to her and he would be proud of the way she has carried on the family business with such dedication and passion. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McCaskey and Halas families and Bears fans around the world.”
