NFL: New York Giants no longer planning on Daniel Jones, insider says

Daniel Jones signed a mega-contract with the New York Giants almost exactly a year ago. Now there are apparently first signs of a separation.

There was a lot of public misunderstanding when the New York Giants signed Daniel Jones to a four-year, 160 million US dollar mega-contract in March 2023 (with an additional 35 million dollars in bonuses possible).

The quarterback had played a decent season in 2022 and led the Giants to the second round of the playoffs. However, the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft fell short of expectations in the three seasons prior to that. And even in the 2022 season, his performance was solid rather than outstanding.

Does a good season justify a high-paying contract for several years? Anyone who doubted this may have felt vindicated last season. Jones only played in six games, five of which the Giants lost.

In all of the games he lost, he went without a touchdown pass. In total, he had two touchdown passes and six interceptions. Then bad luck struck: at the beginning of November, the 26-year-old suffered a torn cruciate ligament and had to undergo surgery.

The Giants are “absolutely done” with Jones

Now there are early indications that the Giants will no longer rely on Jones in the future. NFL Network insider Rich Eisen says he’s heard the New York Islanders are “absolutely done” with Jones.

Eisen elaborated: “The words I heard several times at the Combine were two words: ‘buyer’s remorse’.”

General manager Joe Schoen backs Jones – with one caveat

In public, however, the Giants are still backing Jones. General Manager Joe Schoen stated just last week that they expect Jones to be the starter again after his injury.

But since there is some uncertainty as to when Jones will be given the green light by the doctors, Schoen says the team will have to diversify at the quarterback position. Jones will therefore have competition within the team.

This is often the beginning of the end in the relationship between quarterback and franchise.
