NFL – For Cap Space: New Orleans Saints restructure star contracts

The New Orleans Saints have restructured the contracts of star players Michael Thomas, Ryan Ramczyk and Andrus Peat. This gives the Saints a little more cap space for the coming year. But it’s not enough by a long shot.

Munich/New Orleans – For years, the New Orleans Saints have actually been in cap hell in the NFL. Actually, the Saints have been paying their players too much salary for years, at times the franchise was $90 million over the salary cap.

Now general manager Mickey Loomis has done what he’s done for years: restructure contracts to save money.

Thomas, Peat and Ramczyk with “new” contracts

As NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports, three heavy contracts were adjusted this past weekend. For example, the contracts of wide receiver Michael Thomas and offensive linemen Andrus Peat and Ryan Ramczyk were shuffled to save a total of $34 million for the 2022 season.

Thus, the contracts of Thomas and Peat alone are said to have saved about $26 million, with Ramczyk accounting for the remaining eight million dollars.

However, that’s not enough. The Saints still have a deficit of more than $42 million, so they are over the salary cap of around $203 million for the upcoming season by that amount.

Saints fans need not worry, however. The franchise has been walking a tightrope for years when it comes to salaries. Experts believe that large salary payments can be postponed for another year through restructuring before a real change in personnel has to take place.
