NFL: Dallas Cowboys – Jerry Jones frustrated with Amari Cooper

The Dallas Cowboys are still not calm after their bitter play-off exit. Owner Jerry Jones has now criticised wide receiver Amari Cooper. He called for an increase in his star receiver’s performance in the upcoming season.

Munich/Dallas – Jerry Jones is frustrated. Sure: after the bitter playoff exit, so is everyone at the Dallas Cowboys.

But as an owner, Jones has the right to articulate his frustration. In doing so, he criticised wide receiver Amari Cooper.

In the shadow of CeeDee Lamb

Despite a lucrative contract extension ahead of the 2020 season that made Cooper one of the NFL’s highest-paid wide receivers, he failed to fully impress this season. He was only 39th in receptions (68), 34th in receiving yards (865) and 37th in points scored (eight touchdowns).

He wasn’t even the Cowboys’ leading receiver as CeeDee Lamb caught 79 passes for 1,102 yards and six touchdowns.

“He should tie up several defenders when he is on the field. To do that, he should catch balls when they cover him. Other receivers can do that. You throw to covered guys all the time in the NFL,” Jones said, according to “ProFootballtalk.”

The statements add to doubts about Cooper’s future with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys still have until March 20 to consider whether to keep him, as only then would his $20 million salary for the 2022 season be guaranteed. If parted with, Cooper would only be listed at six million dollars in the Cowboys’ salary cap.

Amari Cooper had said last week in a 17-23 Wild Card Round loss to the San Francisco 49ers that he didn’t know what his future held, but he hoped to stay with the Cowboys.
