New England Patriots: Offensive coordinator Matt Patricia facing retirement

Matt Patricia’s time with the New England Patriots may have come to an end. According to multiple reports, Patricia will no longer have a job with the Patriots next season. The franchise was already interviewing several candidates.

The one-year temporary assignment of Matt Patricia as offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots is in all likelihood over.

As “NBC” has learned, everything indicates that the 48-year-old, who is actually a defensive coordinator, will no longer be the playcaller for the offense in the future.

After Patricia was fired as head coach by the Detroit Lions in 2020, he worked for the Patriots under a valid Lions contract in 2021 and 2022, but without an explicit role. Therefore, his salary continued to be paid by the Lions, but that contract is now expiring.

New England already interviewed several candidates, including Bill O’Brien. The former head coach of the Houston Texans is considered the favourite of most insiders. The current offensive coordinator of the Alabama Crimson Tide (number five offense in the country) previously worked as a coordinator under Bill Belichick.

Linebackers coach Jerod Mayo gets better job

A promotion, on the other hand, is likely coming for Jerod Mayo. The former Patriots linebacker and current linebackers coach reportedly has been by Bill Belichick’s side for all of the interviews.

This suggests that Mayo, who drew a lot of interest in the early weeks after the regular season, will likely be promoted to defensive coordinator. Currently, Belichick and his son Steve are in charge of the Pats’ defence. Officially, the six-time champions do not have any designated coordinators.
