Low value in return! Carolina Panthers trade Brian Burns two years too late

The Carolina Panthers are parting ways with Brian Burns for a comparatively low value. Two years ago, they probably would have gotten a lot more for their linebacker

Brian Burns is moving from the Carolina Panthers to the New York Giants for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick. However, as reported by “Sports Illustrated”, among others, the franchise would have received far more value in 2022.

At the time, the Los Angeles Rams offered two first-round picks and a second-round pick for the linebacker. By rejecting that deal and clearly establishing Burns as a key component of their defense, they inadvertently caused the edge rusher’s value to skyrocket. Rejecting the deal subsequently took the negotiating power out of Carolina’s hands and put it in the player’s hands.

According to “NFL Network”, he can now earn 150 million dollars with the Giants over the next five years, with 87.5 million dollars guaranteed. Big Blue is thus acquiring an outstanding defensive player after previously losing their star running back Saquon Barkley to the Eagles.

Burns is one of the league’s best pass rushers with 46 sacks in his career and will join Kayvon Thibodeaux (11.5 sacks in 2023) to bolster the Giants’ defense.

After the team used a franchise tag on the 25-year-old, a trade was one way to get decent value for the player. A contract extension fell through in the past.
