Actually, the Las Vegas Raiders only signed Marcus Mariota as back-up for starting quarterback Derek Carr of the Tennessee Titans. But if the tide should turn and Mariota becomes a starter, it could earn him a lot of money if he performs really well.
It seems that quarterback Marcus Mariota’s agent has negotiated really well.
As Tom Pelissero of “NFL Network” reports, the new raider’s contract could, under certain circumstances, increase from $17.6 million for two years to a whopping $37.5 million for the same period.
According to the contract, the former signal caller of the Tennessee Titans and current back-up quarterback of Derek Carr is guaranteed “only” 7.5 million dollars in the first year.
But: Should Carr weaken in the course of the season and Mariota take over his place as starting quarterback, the Raiders and General Manager Mike Mayock apparently wanted to write an additional financial incentive into the contract of the signal caller – to perhaps tickle even stronger performances out of him.
And this “small” incentive would amount to around 20 million dollars.
