Kyler Murray is being paid handsomely for his long-term stay with the Arizona Cardinals. Yet, by his own admission, he barely looked at the negotiations. Now, however, he has an even bigger goal in mind.
Munich – The numbers of Kyler Murray’s new contract with the Arizona Cardinals are making waves in the NFL and among fans. It’s a different story for the quarterback himself, who has committed himself for another five years and can rake in up to 230.5 million US dollars between 2024 and 2028.
Murray remained completely relaxed during the weeks of negotiations, as he revealed after the deal was announced. Even when his agent informed him about the pending agreement, he found it difficult to make an emotional move: “Because I am completely focused on football.
Kyler Murray: “My job to bring the Championship here “
But don’t let rumours start that Murray’s heart isn’t with the Cardinals. He put a stop to such thoughts with a declaration of love: “My job is to keep my promise and bring the championship here. There is no question about that. There’s no better place I’d rather be all this time. And I mean that.”
That special bond with the franchise that drafted him as the No. 1 pick in the NFL in 2019 has never changed, he said. Even though the 24-year-old caused a stir when he deleted all photos linking him to the Cards from an Instagram account after the Pro Bowl.
Murray files shitstorm
By his own admission, Murray was able to classify the ensuing shitstorm quite well: “This social media stuff and all that happens regardless. You play well, they love you. You play bad, they hate you.”
The two-time Pro Bowler is under no illusions that the ever-boiling emotions on social media will change anytime soon: “It is what it is. That’s the way our times are. You have to have a thick skin. After all, I grew up with it. So this is nothing new.
Cardinals want to reward Murray with contract “for great play “
Murray is said to have been eyeing the contracts of his teammates as well. According to general manager Steve Keim, the contract included “some team-friendly aspects that were very important to Kyler.”
And to be even more explicit, he added: “It says a lot about him as a teammate and as a competitor that he wants good players around him and understands it that way.” At the same time, he said, the Cardinals also realised “we had to reward him for his great play and everything he’s accomplished. “
Cardinals-GM ends MLB speculation about Murray
While the 2018 Heisman Trophy winner is still waiting for his first playoff win, Murray has left his scent mark on the league with 70 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns. It should also have long been clear that his future lies in the NFL and not in the MLB, for which the Oakland Athletics had already drafted him as the ninth pick in 2018.
When the pertinent question came about his baseball options, Keim intervened, “Have you guys looked at the Oakland A’s payroll compared to his contract here? That says it all.”
So full focus on Murray’s promise. Should he bring the Vince Lombardy Trophy to Glendale, it would be historic. The Cardinals were NFL champions in 1925 and 1947 – well before the Super Bowl era – but back then Chicago was still the home of the franchise.
