Mike McCarthy will remain head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2024. Owner Jerry Jones explains why he made this decision
The Dallas Cowboys continue to rely on Mike McCarthy. Owner Jerry Jones has now commented for the first time on the reasons why he is sticking with the not uncontroversial coach.
After all, the Cowboys have once again failed to make the playoffs. In four seasons under McCarthy for the third time in a row after a 12-5 season. In 2020, they did not even qualify for the postseason.
McCarthy will still be entering his fifth and final year of his contract in 2024. There’s no question he’ll be on the hot seat. But at least he’ll be in the Cowboys coach’s chair.
“There are obviously a lot of things you can consider and think about. Everybody has options. This is one that I feel very comfortable with. I felt good about the job Mike did during the year,” Jones said. The team responded well, and of course everyone was disappointed after the surprising exit in the Wild Card Round against the Green Bay Packers, Jones said, “But there are some things we can take away.”
Jones believes the roster is still ripe for a Super Bowl opportunity, led by quarterback Dak Prescott, who is a finalist for MVP honors. Jones is focusing on the playmaker and his relationship for further development.
“We’re at a key point with Dak,” Jones said. “Dak has improved since Mike has been here, and I think we can look forward to that improvement. There’s more to come in terms of Dak’s improvement with Mike. There are some things that point to that. If there’s more to get, more upside for Dak, it affects a lot of other things we’re doing right now with the decisions we’re making. So it makes sense to keep McCarthy. “
