College Football: Nick Saban voices criticism – “Would rather coach NFL these days”

College coaching legend Nick Saban has ended his career. These days, he would rather coach in the NFL due to the conditions.

Nick Saban is a college football legend.

The 73-year-old has a record of 201-29 as Alabama coach and has won the national title six times with the team. He also won the national title once with LSU. The head coach has also been extremely successful at Toledo and Michigan State.

He even worked in the NFL once. From 2005 to 2006 with the Miami Dolphins. Despite numerous offers in recent years, Saban wanted to stay in the college ranks, where he also made good money. He finally announced his retirement in January 2024.

In the “Pivot Podcast” he now revealed that he would rather be a coach in the NFL than in college football these days.

“If you look at the conditions in college and the NFL today, I would rather coach in the NFL. Simply based on what college football has become,” Saban revealed in the podcast.

College Football: Nick Saban criticizes development

“The whole idea of what college football used to stand for no longer exists. It has changed completely. It used to be about developing a player in college football so that he would have a high value later on. Nowadays, players just want to make the maximum money right away.”

And further: “I’m not saying that’s wrong. But it changes the whole dynamic of getting a decent education and making good decisions about things you should and shouldn’t do for your future. Guys can now become free agents twice a year and go wherever they want. The question for players now is where can I make the most money.”

Since 2021, sustainable changes have been made in college football. The “NIL rule” allows players to change colleges more often and make a lot of money.

According to ESPN, Saban was already considering ending his career in 2022 because he didn’t like the change.
