After a historically weak first half, the Chicago Bears turn the game around against the San Francisco 49ers and inflict a surprising defeat on the Californians in the pouring rain. Equanimeous St. Brown scores his first touchdown for the Bears.
Chicago – After a historically weak first half, the Chicago Bears turned around their home game against the Super Bowl contender San Francisco 49ers and won 19-10.
In the duel of quarterback hopefuls, Chicago’s Justin Fields rushed for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns with one interception. 49ers quarterback Trey Lance collected 164 passing yards but did not score a touchdown on an interception.
German-American Equanimeous St. Brown, who scored his first touchdown for the Chicago Bears, played a decisive role in Chicago’s victory.
No points in the first quarter
Both teams had a rough start to the game. Due to heavy rain, there was water on the turf at Soldier Field, neither offence could really make up space at first. For the 49ers, who were without star tight end George Kittle (groin problems), wide receiver Deebo Samuel had a fumble.
But the mishap had no consequences, nor did an interception by Bears quarterback Fields. The defensive lines dominated on both sides, the first quarter ended without points.
Things went better for Samuel at the beginning of the second quarter. Used as a running back, Samuel once again proved his versatility and heaved the ball into the end zone from six yards. Robbie Gould converted the extra point to make it 7-0.
Kuriose penalty on the Bears punter
The Bears continued to lack momentum, with head coach Matt Eberflus’ team totaling just 84 yards in the first two quarters, not a single pass landing with any of their receivers. That hadn’t happened to the Bears since 1991.
There was also a curious scene: Rookie punter Trenton Gill brought a towel as a holder to wipe the field dry. He collected a penalty from the referees for this, which cost the Bears the field goal attempt.
After the break the 49ers were again in control. Fields, however, was unable to finish off a good drive. Instead, kicker Gould extended the lead to 10-0 from 25 yards out.
Pettis carries first catch for touchdown
A little later, however, Fields found Dante Pettis, who carried the Bears’ first receiving catch of the new season straight to a touchdown.
The Bears got within three points and were suddenly well in the game. A little later, St. Brown caught an 18-yard pass from Fields for his first catch of the season and his first touchdown for the Bears.
Suddenly the Bears led 13-10, but the ensuing extra point was missed on the slippery surface.
Now the 49ers were struggling, quarterback Lance made his first interception. The Bears converted the following drive to the next touchdown by running back Khalil Herbert. Kicker Cairo Santos kicked the egg again next to the uprights on a slippery field.
But there were no consequences, the Bears won 19:10.
