Chicago Bears: Justin Fields sees ‘coaching’ as part of the problem

Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears have had a slow start to the season. In a press conference, the quarterback cites possible reasons for his struggles so far.

The Chicago Bears’ offense has not made a good impression in the first two games of the season – especially in the passing game quarterback Justin Fields continues to struggle.

During a press conference, the 24-year-old commented on the problems so far: “I haven’t been playing like myself. I need to think less and just play more instinctively.”

When asked what made him think too much, Fields stated that “coaching” was also a possible factor: “They’re just doing their job, telling me what I need to look at. But I can’t think about it too much when I’m in the game […] I have to play more freely then.”

After Fields’ quote about the alleged “coaching” problems made the rounds in the media, the Bears quarterback rowed back: “I have to play better, that’s it. I should have said that from the beginning.”

“I wanted to give you more details, but it was […] made to look like I said something I didn’t say at all” lamented the 24-year-old.

After a promising second year in the NFL, in which Fields’ running talent in particular shined, the Bears had hoped for another step forward in his development. For despite the many positives, the young quarterback failed to impress as a passer last season.

Fields finished last season with 2,242 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and eleven interceptions in 15 games. In the rushing game, however, he managed a historic 1,143 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

In 2023, Fields threw for 427 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in the first two games. The Bears lost both games – to the Packers in Week 1 and to the Buccaneers in Week 2.
