A newspaper report says Matt Nagy will be fired after Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions. The head coach denies this.
Munich/Chicago – Is Matt Nagy facing his last game as head coach of the Chicago Bears?
The news website “Patch.com” had reported that Bears chairman George McCaskey had already informed the coach that he would be fired after Thursday’s Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions.
The coach denied that. “That’s not correct,” he said at a news conference Tuesday when asked about it. In any case, he would not have spoken to McCaskey this week. But he said that had been the plan, so he could confer again before the game against Detroit.
Nagy in charge of Bears since 2018
He declined to answer further questions about whether Nagy was sure he would remain coach of the Bears until the end of the season. Instead, he said he wanted to focus fully on the tasks ahead: “The only thing we can do is keep playing and keep coaching and keep doing everything we can to win.”
Nagy has coached the Bears since 2018 and reached the playoffs in two of three seasons, but failed to make the Wild Card Game each time. Nagy is under internal scrutiny anyway. After last season, McCaskey said, “I think we’ll all know soon if there’s been enough improvement or enough progress to continue working together beyond 2021.”
Bears fans were already venting their frustration with “Fire Nagy” chants. There were even chants to that effect at a Chicago Bulls basketball game.
The Bears have lost their last five games and stand at a record of 3-7.
