Carolina Panthers: D.J. Moore defends his cheer – penalty causes trouble

Panthers receiver D.J. Moore shows disagreement despite his helmet antics. After a penalty for taking off his helmet on the field, the Carolina Panthers had lost the game against the Atlanta Falcons after overtime.

Munich/Charlotte – D.J. Moore is still not aware of any guilt.

The wide receiver of the Carolina Panthers had cheered a touchdown without a helmet in the game against the Atlanta Falcons. The subsequent 15-yard penalty he received for this cost the Panthers the bottom line of the victory. A reason for despair for the 25-year-old?

“Remorse? No!” Moore responded to a question to that effect, according to ESPN.

Carolina Panthers: Moore under criticism after penalty

But the Panthers receiver wouldn’t let his statement stand quite so without explanation.

“I stand by it. It was simply an ‘in-the-moment’ decision,” the 25-year-old said.

Outsiders apparently resent him nonetheless: he received nothing but negative feedback for his action, the pass receiver continued. Instead, few would have been happy about the previous 62-yard touchdown. He had only tied the game against the Falcons. But after his penalty, the Panthers missed the extra point from 48 instead of 33 yards away. It went into overtime, in which the Falcons had the upper hand.

D.J. Moore: NFL rule prohibits excessive cheering

“I should have kept my helmet on,” was the most common response to him, Moore said. Still, the wide receiver continues to disbelieve his jubilation warrants a 15-yard penalty.

The league rules that a team receives a 15-yard penalty for excessive cheering by a player, known as “taunting.” This is to protect opposing teams and players alike from humiliation and taunting.

“At the end of the day, it shouldn’t matter if I’m on, or off the field. I don’t think it was excessive,” Moore said.

With his rash action, Moore still indirectly handed the Panthers a loss. In Week 9, the wide receiver will face the Cincinnati Bengals with his franchise – and can show that he has learned from his penalty.
