Washington Football Team: Haskins is looking forward to Smith: “See Alex as a mentor”

Will Alex Smith make the sensational return to the Washington football team? Head Coach Ron Rivera hopes so and quarterback Dwayne Haskins is happy.

Ron Rivera continues to raise hopes for the NFL comeback of the year.

To put it bluntly, Alex Smith has already earned the award with his return to the football field, and is now training again after his serious leg injury in November 2018. Still limited, of course.

Big happy ending
But should the quarterback actually be able to play again, the sensational story would have a happy ending with ribbons.

And the odds are obviously not bad, as the coach of the Washington Football Team has been emphasising for the past few weeks that he can imagine the 36-year-old playing a role in the preparation for the 2020 season.

“This could be a very interesting challenge for us,” Rivera recently said. “If Alex continues to recover and we activate him, he will be in the middle of this competition,” Rivera emphasised.

This is a good development for Washington as a team, said Rivera: “This competition only makes you better, it will also drive the young people. It will be a very challenging situation to make sure that the reps are fairly distributed.”

Smith would then compete against youngster Dwayne Haskins, first-round pick of 2019, and newcomer Kyle Allen. If there’s enough time to get back in shape. Currently the veteran is still on the PUP list (“Physically unable to perform”) and is working on his return.

“I must compete”
“I’m looking forward to Alex,” Haskins said. “I hope he will be 100 percent recovered. Whoever I’m in the quarterback’s room with, I have to compete with.”

Haskins, who has had a not so easy rookie season, sees the positive in a possible return of Smith: “Even when we’re competing against each other, I try to make him better and I try to make him better too. We see Alex as a mentor who can help and prepare us every day.”
