49ers legend Bryant Young will be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. The former defensive tackle talks about a very special person in his acceptance speech, touching listeners.
Munich – Touching moment in the NFL: Bryant Young, part of the 1995 San Francisco 49ers championship team, was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
During his acceptance speech, the former defensive tackle not only moved those present in front of and on the stage. Young spoke about the person he would have loved to share this momentous occasion with: his son Colby. The former NFL star’s child died of cancer in 2016 at the age of just 15.
That the 50-year-old, who won titles alongside Steve Young, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders, is part of the “Class of 22” moved him deeply – after all, 22 was his son’s favourite number.
Hall of Famer remembers late son
At the age of 13, Colby Young was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Although an initial operation was successful, the cancer returned.

His late son Colby’s favorite number was 22. It was only right. ❤️

“The cancer spread too far too fast. Colby sensed what was going to happen and had questions. He didn’t fear death so much as the process of dying. Will it be painful? Will he be remembered?” said Young.
Visibly emotional, the Hall of Famer also added that it was important to him to keep his child’s memory alive. The audience in the Ohio stadium responded with a standing ovation.
The 50-year-old and his wife Kristin have six more children.
