To Corona Falls: NFL considers play-off bubble

After the latest Corona cases, the US professional football league NFL is apparently looking into a “bubble” solution for the play-offs.

After the latest Corona cases, the US professional football league NFL is apparently dealing with a “bubble” solution for the play-offs.

The online portal “The Athletic” writes this with reference to NFL internal sources. According to the report, Los Angeles or Dallas could serve as locations in which games are played centrally from the quarter finals onwards. The Super Bowl is currently scheduled for February 7, 2021 in Tampa, Florida.

The closed system had previously been used by other leagues such as the NBA in basketball, the NHL in ice hockey or the MLB in baseball. However, according to The Athletic, an NFL bubble within the current regular season is unlikely due to the high logistical hurdles.

Bubble planned from January
Also the first play-off round could still be played at the club locations, before it would go into the bubble in January. Previously, there had also been proposals to extend the 17-day main round by one week.

In the weeks before, Corona Falls and the resulting rescheduling of games had turned the NFL’s plans upside down. Before the fifth matchday last weekend, the league had postponed three games, and the training facilities of some teams had to be closed.

Titans cannot train in their facilities
For example, the Tennessee Titans, who now have 24 corona cases among players and staff, have to train outside their facilities.
