St. Brown, Johnson & Co.: How the Regular Season went for the Germans

The 2021 regular season is over. Five Germans played in the 18 match days. ran looks back at the season of the German NFL pros.

Munich – Five Germans were involved in the 2021 NFL season, three are now even in the playoffs with their teams. A balance sheet.

Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions)

Amon-Ra St. Brown has hit the ground running in his first NFL season. Looking back, the Detroit Lions are lucky to have gotten such an exceptional player in the fourth round of the 2021 draft in the first place.

With 912 receiving yards and five touchdowns, St. Brown was the Lions’ most effective pass receiver. If that wasn’t enough, he was named the Rookie of the Month for December and also caught at least eight balls in the last six straight games, setting a rookie record.

In the last four games, he averaged 100.25 receiving yards and one touchdown. Head Coach Dan Campell praised, “This kid is better than gold. “

Equanimeous St. Brown (Green Bay Packers)

Equanimeous St. Brown had more of a mixed year. In his fourth season as an NFL pro, the older brother of Amon-Ra was released by the Green Bay Packers before the season began, but was then at least put on the practice squad.

St. Brown then bounced back and forth between the practice squad and the active squad, eventually making 13 appearances and even taking the field twice as a starter. His output: 98 receiving yards. If you disregard the missed 2019 season due to injury, this was the weakest figure of his career so far.

At least he was also used on special teams and made a kick return of 17 yards. His rookie contract expires after the season, so he could be looking for a new team as an unrestricted free agent. Before that, though, the playoffs are coming up.

Jakob Johnson (New England Patriots)

Jakob Johnson is highly regarded by the New England Patriots. The fullback was on the field in all 17 games this season, six of them as a starter. His statistics with the ball – 43 receiving yards, 14 rushing yards – are far from reflecting his actual value.

Johnson shines primarily as a blocker and was on the field for up to 49 percent of all snaps (the highest value in Week 13 against the Buffalo Bills). The Stuttgart native was also part of the return team and once carried the ball back himself for 14 yards.

His contract with the Patriots expires after the season. Because of his status as a restricted free agent, however, New England has the right to match offers from other teams and keep Johnson on the team. But for Johnson, too, the playoffs are now first on the agenda.

Mark Nzeocha (San Francisco 49ers)

Better late than never: After months of clublessness, Mark Nzeocha rejoined his former team in San Francisco on 29 December. He was initially signed to the Practice Squad, but then was on the active squad for the last two games.

Nzeocha was used on special teams and recorded two tackles. He is now looking ahead to the playoffs with the 49ers.

Dominik Eberle (Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers)

Dominik Eberle made his NFL debut for the Houston Texans in Week 16 because their actual kicker Kaʻimi Fairbairn was out due to a Corona illness.

Eberle was convincing, hitting all five extra points and two field goals of 51 and 25 yards. He missed another shot over 52 yards. After the return of the regular kicker, Eberle was released in Houston, but in return he came to the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers for the second time.
