The Denver Broncos apparently want a big solution in their search for a new head coach: the franchise may officially hold talks with Sean Payton. Denver, however, is said to be far from the only franchise with interest in Payton.
The Denver Broncos apparently have strong interest in Sean Payton and are apparently not alone in courting the veteran coach.
According to “ESPN”, the franchise has already officially inquired with the New Orleans Saints in order to hold talks with the long-time successful coach about a commitment as head coach. According to the report, the Broncos have also received permission from the Saints.
Sean Payton: Also an option for Cardinals as head coach?
And as “Pro Football Talk” reports, it is also expected that the Arizona Cardinals will soon ask the Saints for an audience with Payton after a sobering season.
According to the report, Kliff Kingsbury’s future in Arizona is under scrutiny after finishing fourth in the NFC West and clearly missing the playoffs with a record of 4-12 before the final game of the season.
Kingsbury’s contract is guaranteed through 2026, with an option even available for 2027.
Officially allowed job interviews with Payton as of January 17. Now, more and more offers are coming in for the experienced coach, who retired before the current season after 15 years with the Saints and is considered one of the hottest candidates for a coaching position in the NFL for the coming season.
Leading the way in Denver.
Denver Broncos: Parting ways with Nathaniel Hackett on Dec. 26
The Broncos had parted ways with their previous head coach Nathaniel Hackett on December 26. The 14:51 debacle against the Los Angeles Rams before that was Hackett’s final undoing.
The Broncos are in fourth and last place in the AFC West Division before the last game day – with four wins and twelve losses. That means the franchise missed the playoffs for the seventh straight season.
Russell Wilson: expectations not met
The signing of quarterback Russell Wilson also turned into a sporting disaster, with the superstar failing to live up to expectations.
Co-Owner Greg Penner had stated in the course of the dismissal, among other things: “We will make all the necessary changes to restore the winning tradition of this franchise. Our fans deserve better.”
Is the solution Sean Payton?
Sean Payton: taking a break from the NFL
Payton had taken a break from coaching in 2022. After a decade and a half with the Saints, it was over for the time being. The 59-year-old won the Super Bowl with the team in the 2009 season.
To sign Payton, however, an agreement with the Saints is needed, because his contract officially runs until 2024.
Recently, there have been increasing signs that Payton may return to the Saints. A collaboration with Tom Brady was also mentioned as a possibility. Payton does not rule that out in principle, as he recently explained. But rather in a different area.
