“Hurt me” – Here’s what Rams coach McVay regrets about Goff’s departure.

Ahead of the 2021 season, Rams quarterback Jared Goff will be traded to the Lions. Head coach Sean McVay regrets in hindsight how he communicated with his ex-playmaker during that time

Munich – It was one of the biggest quarterback trades in recent years. Before the 2021 season, Rams playmaker Jared Goff was traded to the Detroit Lions along with several draft picks. In return, the California franchise got Matthew Stafford.

A trade that paid off for the Rams. Under the new signal caller, they managed to win the Super Bowl a few months ago.

Now Rams head coach Sean McVay has spoken out on the “Open Mike Podcast” and admitted he regrets the way he communicated with his former quarterback.

McVay regrets communication with Goff

“That was a difficult thing for me because it’s more important than anything to be a good communicator – clear, open and honest. You have to make sure people don’t get blindsided and you have to really show respect to the players and coaches for what they do. And I wish the face-to-face communication had been better,” said McVay, regretting how Goff’s departure went.

“The only thing that hurt me is that I never want anything to be misunderstood in terms of my appreciation and respect for Jared. Was it a difficult decision? Yes. Were there some things I could have handled better to give him clarity? Undoubtedly.”

Most notably, the fact that trade talks picked up such steam after the Rams interest became known, and the deal was locked in within a very short period of time, became a problem for McVay.

“All in all, my biggest regret is not being able to sit down with him, look him in the eye and let him know where we are and what we want to do in the future. I will not make those mistakes again.”

He continued, “I wish I had done better as a leader for him. “

Goff congratulated on Rams’ Super Bowl win

That’s why the head coach was especially pleased when he got “one of the best text messages” from his former playmaker after the Super Bowl win.

“I think the further we get away from him, the more we appreciate the great four years we had together – because there were a lot of really good times.”

Goff played under coach McVay from 2017 to 2020. In the 2018 season, the team made it to the Super Bowl, but lost to the New England Patriots.
