After the coaching domino in college football, two coveted head coaching positions have become vacant in one fell swoop. Urban Meyer, however, says this leaves him cold. He wants to remain loyal to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Munich – Both the Oklahoma Sooners and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a coaching vacancy after the surprising departures of Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly.
Two universities that are highly regarded and have a combined 18 National Championships under their belts. The temptation is likely to be great among some NFL coaches.
Urban Meyer in particular was initially repeatedly linked to Notre Dame, partly because the 57-year-old had described the post as his “dream job” in the past.
Meyer remains loyal to Jaguars
But the Jaguars head coach says he has no intention of joining the Fighting Irish. He told reporters on Tuesday, “I’m not a candidate. I’m committed to the Jaguars and I’m going to do everything I can to turn this place around.”
“ESPN” also reports that Meyer has no interest in starting another college job at his age. The network cites a source close to Meyer.
This isn’t the first time the 57-year-old has been mentioned as a candidate for a college job opening. After USC fired their coach Clay Helton in September, Meyer was also considered for the position.
Even then, he made it clear there was “no chance” he would leave the NFL to become the Trojans’ head coach.
In his college coaching career, Meyer won three National Championships – two with the Florida Gators (2006 and 2008) and one with the Ohio State Buckeyes (2014). His record stands at an astounding 187 wins to 32 losses.
