Calais Campbell of the Atlanta Falcons has spoken out in an interview with the “Sports Business Journal” in favor of rule changes in dealing with gambling.
If NFL star Calais Campbell has his way, the NFL should significantly loosen the rules for players in relation to gambling – at least since the NFL itself has entered into partnerships with gambling companies.
“I think the rules are old-fashioned. Of course an NFL player shouldn’t be allowed to bet on NFL games, but why does that apply to other sports? I don’t understand why a player can’t sit in the booth on a Wednesday and bet on an NBA or MLB game,” Campbell said in an interview with Sports Business Journal.
Currently, players are prohibited from engaging in any form of sports betting during working hours (for example, while in the team’s building). The interpretation of the penalty is determined by the league. In recent seasons, several players have been suspended for violations.
Calvin Ridley of the Jacksonville Jaguars, for example, missed the entire 2022/23 season. Jameson Williams of the Detroit Lions was suspended for the first four games of the past season.
