NFL: Rob Gronkowski ennobles new coach Jerod Mayo

Two former teammates of Jerod Mayo have great confidence in the qualities of the New England Patriots coach

Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman have spoken highly of their former teammate Jerod Mayo and have confidence in his ability to succeed as head coach of the New England Patriots.

Mayo “showed his coaching skills” as a player, explained Gronkowski in the “Games With Names” podcast. Back then, he knew exactly where to stand on the pitch and what the opposing team would do next.

“Jarod Mayo was just a phenom on the football field,” Gronkowski continued: “He knew where every player needed to be during every situation that happened on defense. He could read the offense. He knew when to call plays and he was always right when he called them.”

Edelman may have been a wide receiver, but he also got minutes on defense at times during his time with Mayo in New England. He would “always ask Jerod for permission” when it came to what he was going to do next.

The Patriots hope Mayo can now show that quality as a head coach.
