NFL Playoffs: Owners vote on change to seeding format

The NFL could be facing a landmark change. Team owners will soon vote on a possible change to the playoff seeding format.

An important decision in the NFL is coming up next week in Minneapolis. Will the playoff seeding format remain the same or will there be a significant change?

Team owners are now voting on the Detroit Lions’ proposal to change the current seeding format, which would see teams seeded strictly according to their regular season record. This is according to multiple sources. Until now, the top four spots have automatically gone to the division winners.

Further details of the change would also include the division title being the first tiebreaker, rather than the head-to-head record as is currently the case.

In addition, the teams would be reseated after the first playoff round. This would mean that the number 1 seed would always face the team with the worst seed in the conference.

According to the report, the NFL wants to further increase the excitement towards the end of the season by changing the playoff seeding format. The change is also intended to discourage teams from resting their star players in weeks 17 and 18.

According to the report, however, only a few teams were willing to agree to the Lions’ proposal in an unofficial vote by Commissioner Roger Goodell in March.
