Munich/New York City – The number of corona cases in the NFL continues to rise sharply. Another 51 players entered the COVID protocol on Monday, the NFL revealed on its website.

There had never been so many positive coronatests on any previous day. According to league figures, about two-thirds of the players are asymptomatic, while the others who tested positive have reported mild symptoms.

New rules because of Omikron

In the wake of the spread of the Omikron variant, the NFL had recently tightened its security measures. As of late, all players, coaches and staff are required to wear mouth-to-nose protection, regardless of their vaccination status, and team meetings must be held either outdoors or with sufficient distance between them.

In addition, players are prohibited from eating in groups, meals will be takeaway only. External visitors will also be prohibited when travelling.

There has also been a change in the protocol for the return of vaccinated players who have tested positive but are asymptomatic. Under the previous rules, a vaccinated player who tested positive had to present two negative tests 24 hours apart before they could play again. Under the new protocol, vaccinated players who test negative can return to play more quickly.
