NFL MVP voting to be expanded: Regulation also adjusted for other awards

For more than half a century, the “Associated Press” has chosen the MVP after each NFL season. This season the voting system will be changed – according to the agency in favour of the participating journalists.

Munich – The MVP election in the NFL will be modified. This was announced by the news agency “Associated Press” (AP), which has awarded the prize annually to the best player of the regular season since 1957.

The award is based on the votes of 50 selected sports journalists who cover the NFL. Starting as early as this season, they will name the ranking of their top 5 in MVP voting, rather than just their favourite.

In addition, each participant will cast their vote for First as well as Second Team All-Pro – this is about the best players at each position.

In the other categories – Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year and Coach of the Year – the journalists each submit their top three.

This will allow the runners-up and third-place finishers to be highlighted more prominently when the awards are presented, in addition to the respective winner. These will be announced as part of the twelfth NFL Honors on February 9, 2023 at the start of Super Bowl weekend.

MVP Award: only Manning has more trophies than Rodgers

“The essence of the ‘AP NFL Awards’ remains the same: to determine the best of the season,” AP Global Sports Editor Ricardo Zuniga is quoted as saying. “Our goal is to provide voting participants with an accurate and fair voting system that reflects their preferences. These changes will help them do that.”

Last season, Aaron Rodgers won the prestigious MVP trophy for the fourth time, repeating his triumph from the previous year. The record winner is Peyton Manning, who has been awarded five times.
