NFL legend John Elway: No charges for his agent’s death in a golf accident

John Elway was involved in the accidental death of an agent while driving a golf cart. However, the former quarterback will not face any legal consequences.

John Elway, considered one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history and most recently general manager of the Denver Broncos, was involved in a tragic accident in April.

His former agent, Jeff Sperbeck, died from a head injury sustained when he fell from a golf cart. Elway was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. However, the former quarterback will not be charged.

Riverside County (California) Sheriff Chad Bianco told TV station “9NEWS” that the investigation into Sperbeck’s death had been completed.

“It’s over. We’ve talked to everyone involved and found nothing new. There was nothing criminal. We’ve said all along that this was a tragic accident.”

For Elway himself, the accident was a heavy blow. “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken over the death of my close friend, business partner, and agent Jeff Sperbeck. There are no words to express the deep sadness I feel over the sudden loss of someone who meant so much to me,” he said in a statement after Sperbeck’s death.

“My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife Cori, his children Carly, Sam and Jackson, and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought to my life and the lives of so many others.”

Elway won two Super Bowls with the Broncos during his 16-year NFL career. He later served as general manager and executive vice president of the Broncos before transitioning to an advisory role until his contract expired in March 2023.
