In the 2023 NFL season starting in September, two games will be played in Germany for the first time. However, this will probably remain an exception for the time being.
After the first-ever double-header in Frankfurt/Main in the autumn, only one NFL game is likely to be played on German soil again in 2024. “This year there will be two, we will probably go back to one the following year,” Brett Gosper, European head of the US professional football league, told “SID” at the SPOBIS Conference in Düsseldorf.
Last year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by the now-retired superstar Tom Brady, won 21-16 against the Seattle Seahawks in Munich in front of a sell-out crowd for the German premiere. “The atmosphere was unbelievable,” Gosper said looking back, highlighting the good TV ratings – also in the USA.
NFL: Chiefs and Patriots in Germany as guests
On 5 November, Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will face the Miami Dolphins at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, followed by the New England Patriots versus Indianapolis Colts at the same venue on 12 November.
“We have great match-ups,” said Gosper, adding that due to the successful Munich game, “expectations are high. We’re very focused on our strategy of playing main round games here. “
