NFL – Flag football: 66-year-old Hall of Famer wants to go to the World Cup

Darrell Green wants to give it another go. He is aiming to be nominated for the USA flag football team – at the age of 66!

That’s quite an announcement.

Darrell Green is a Hall of Fame cornerback. Two-time Super Bowl winner. Seven-time Pro Bowler. Legend in Washington, where he played for 20 years until 2002.

Green now wants to make a name for himself in flag football. That is why he is taking part in the trials for the US national team. If he can impress there, a place in Team USA for the World Cup in Germany this summer beckons.

The crazy thing: Green is 66 years old. And convinced of his intentions. And also highly motivated.

“I will give it my all. And no matter how it turns out, I’ll go with my head held high,” said Green.

Flag Football: Green can convince

The whole thing is not a crazy idea. Because Green was able to convince in the run-up.

“Darrell qualified via our digital Combine. He is older than the other participants, but his test results were impressive,” Callie Brownson, senior director for high performance and national teams at USA Football, told the Associated Press.

The coaches and staff felt that Green deserved a closer look. “He’s an exceptional athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete,” Brownson added.

And what does that possibly mean for the Olympics, where flag football will debut in Los Angeles in 2028? It is still unclear who will be competing for the USA in flag football at the Games. What is certain, however, is that Green would then be 68 years old. That probably won’t stop him.
