Munich – The untimely death of former running back Marion Barber III on June 1 shocked the NFL. Now the Collin County coroner’s office announced the cause of death: The ex-pro, who died at age 38, died of heat stroke.

When Barber was found dead in his flat, the thermostat was reportedly set to a temperature of just under 33 degrees. Officers also found exercise equipment in the room. “Mr. Barber was known to work out in sauna-like conditions,” the coroner wrote in his report.

The Cowboys had selected Barber in the 4th round in 2005 and he played six of his seven seasons in Dallas. He had his final season with the Chicago Bears in 2011.

Barber made the Pro Bowl in 2007 when he ran for 975 yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns. He finished his career with 4,780 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns.
