NFL – Ex-NFL pro Michael Oher speaks out on “The Blind Side” scandal: “Been vulnerable”

The world-famous movie “The Blind Side” about ex-NFL pro Michael Oher ultimately led to a lawsuit filed by the tackle against his alleged adoptive family. Now, for the first time, Oher has spoken out himself

The film “Blind Side – The Big Chance” portrays the life of Michael Oher. He grew up in a home because his mother was deprived of custody due to drug abuse. He was then adopted by the Tuohy family and Oher eventually made it to the NFL.

A few months ago, however, the former NFL player caused a stir.

He filed a lawsuit alleging that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy tricked Oher into signing a guardianship agreement in order to relieve the ex-professional of millions.

Now the former NFL star has spoken out for the first time after filing the lawsuit.

Oher: “You are vulnerable ”

Oher recalled in an interview with The New York Times how the Tuohy family’s caring had clouded his perception. “It was Sean and Leigh Anne who said ‘I love you’ for the first time,” he revealed to the magazine, ”When that happens at 18, you become vulnerable.”

Oher clarified that his time with the family was “great” as he enjoyed a lot of freedoms that he didn’t have in the previous stage of his life. Nevertheless, he is not a fan of the movie “The Blind Side”, saying that it portrays what happened inaccurately and does not present the athlete and person that Oher sees himself as.

“It’s hard to describe my reaction. It seemed kind of funny to me, to be honest, like it was a comedy about someone else,” says the now 38-year-old.

His eight-year involvement in the NFL was also influenced by the successful Hollywood film starring actress Sandra Bullock: “The NFL people wondered if I could read a playbook,” he recalls: “If my kids can’t do something in class, will their teacher think, ‘Their dad is stupid – is that why they don’t understand it?”

Due to the way he was portrayed, Oher would even have liked to have filed a lawsuit earlier, he said in the interview. Only his football career and the fact that he was “mentally so angry” about the situation prevented him from doing so.

“Blind Side”: What are the allegations?

Oher has filed a 14-page petition in court, as “ESPN” reports. The short form takes the good part of the story ad absurdum. The allegation is that a central element of the story is based on a lie.

According to the report, Oher, who the Tuohys took in as a high school student, was never adopted by the family. Instead, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy are said to have tricked him into signing a guardianship.

With the guardianship, they allegedly had power of attorney to conduct business for him, even after he turned 18. In addition, according to the lawsuit, he allegedly gave 20th Century Fox Studios the rights to his story “without any payment.”

Oher’s lawyers claimed that the Tuohys had exploited Oher to earn around eight million dollars over the past 20 years.

Sean Tuohy reacted with shock after the lawsuit was made public. “We are devastated,” he told the Daily Memphian: ”The thought that we would make money from one of our children is devastating. But we will love Michael at 37 just as much as we loved him at 16.”

Later, they also let their lawyer speak: The family describes their alleged adopted son’s accusations as “made up out of thin air”, “hurtful” and “absurd”.
