Was an agent using vacation homes to help his players get drafted? David Canter has been investigated for that reason

The football business is highly competitive, especially around the draft. Young players are rushing into the NFL, and the talent draft is not only about the future team, but also about big money. The higher the players are picked, the bigger the payday.

Behind the scenes, talks are already being held in advance, negotiations, and apparently the limits are being explored there as well: As “ESPN” reports, the players’ union NFLPA is investigating agent David Canter.

“Form of bribery”?

Because the longtime veteran agent and president of GSE Worldwide’s football division allegedly contacted several teams during draft weekend. In doing so, he allegedly offered them the use of vacation homes owned by him and his wife if the team drafted one of his players, “ESPN” reports, citing anonymous sources. They would have called Canter’s actions a “form of bribery.”

That one tries as an agent to convince a team with incentives to draft a player is not expressly forbidden by the NFLPA, according to “ESPN”. But Canter may have violated several articles of the regulations for consultants. Anything from a fine to loss of eligibility is possible for a violation.

“We are aware that the NFLPA is investigating communications between my client and various executives of certain NFL teams,” Canter’s attorney Adam Kenner told “ESPN. “Mr. Canter has not been found at fault and is cooperating fully with the NFLPA. We anticipate that the situation will be resolved shortly. “

“ProFootballTalk” can apparently confirm the report, however. A general manager, who requested anonymity, has confirmed such an offer, it says. He also knows of at least two others who have received a similar offer, the report continues.

21 players from draft class

Canter and GSE Worldwide have 21 players represented in the 2023 draft class, including wide receiver Jayden Reed, whom the Green Bay Packers selected in the second round. Among current NFL stars, cornerback Xavien Howard of the Miami Dolphins, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence of the Dallas Cowboys and cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. of the Los Angeles Chargers are part of the portfolio.
