Defensive back Marcel Dabo is not selected by any team in the NFL Draft. Where does the German go from here? What opportunities does he have to make it to the best football league in the world?
Munich – “I have done everything I could do. Everything that comes now is out of my control, I can’t do anything. That’s why all I can do now is wait and see.”
Knowing full well that the jump to the best football league in the world may or may not work out. The defensive back’s ambitions were high – and not without reason.
Already at the International Combine at the end of last year and especially at the Pro Day in Arizona a few weeks ago, the German had given a respectable performance. Especially his 1.0287 metres in the vertical high jump astonished the competition.
Marcel Dabo: Pathway Programme as a chance?
Even on “NFL Network” the youngster, who played for the Stuttgart Surge in the European League of Football last season and was named Defensive Rookie of the Year, was the subject of discussion. In doing so, he was referred to as a “sleeper” ahead of the talent selection.
In the end, it still didn’t work out. The German’s name was not read out for any of the 262 picks.
But that doesn’t mean his NFL dream is over. He still has the chance to get into the league via the International Pathway Programme or to recommend himself for a contract.
A division is selected at random, and Dabo would then be included in the practice squad of one of the four teams. The NFC North, the AFC South and the AFC West are all possible candidates in 2022. So for the avowed Packers fan, even Green Bay would at least be a possibility.
Marcel Dabo isn’t stressing out
Last time Jakob Johnson made the jump to the NFL like this, he ended up with the New England Patriots and will play for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.
In addition to the Pathway Programme, Dabo can of course also be signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by one of the 32 teams.
But the athlete is not putting any pressure on himself in all this. “I just give it my all, I control what I can control and see what comes out in the end. “
