Less than three months before the start of the new NFL season, a rule change regarding the Injured Reserve List is made public
The NFL has informed the players’ union NFLPA that the rules for naming players to return from the Injured Reserve List in 2024 have changed.
Accordingly, teams are still permitted to name a maximum of eight players during the regular season. For the postseason, teams will be given two additional designation options.
If a franchise has not exhausted its eight possible players in the regular season, it can take them into the playoffs, meaning that a total of ten players can return over the course of the season. A player can return twice from the injured list – including the postseason.
The Detroit Lions had previously proposed that an unlimited number of injured-reserve returnees be allowed in the playoffs.
But a player still has to miss at least four games before he can return.
Meanwhile, another proposal from the Lions has been approved by the NFL. Teams are now allowed to place two players on the IR list on the day the roster is reduced to 53 players. Previously, players had to be on the roster for at least one day in order to be activated from the list later in the year.
