The NFL will be discussing rule changes for the upcoming season in the coming days. One play is apparently not affected: the “Tush Push.”
Jubilation in Philadelphia: The Eagles will probably still be allowed to perform their popular move called the “Tush Push” in the coming season.
As NFL board member Troy Vincent announced, there is no discussion of abolishing this move this offseason.
In recent years, the Philadelphia Eagles in particular have scored touchdowns by the dozen using this type of quarterback sneak. “The Eagles,” Vincent said in a conference, “do it well.”
But how exactly does the “Tush Push” work, from which Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has often benefited?
Philadelphia executed the move to perfection in the 2022 season at the latest. Unlike usual, two or three players position themselves behind Hurts and push the playmaker forward after the snap
In this way, the quarterback converted an impressive 37 of 41 quarterback sneaks into new first attempts – or touchdowns – in 2022.
Pushing a ball carrier to move him forward has been allowed in the NFL since 2005. Surprisingly, however, the Eagles were the first team to make this technique an integral part of the offense.
Last season, the Eagles in particular also used the “tush push”. However, the fact that there are discussions about abolishing it is nothing new. After the 2022 season, there were already indications that the NFL rule makers would take a closer look at the play.
But the “Tush Push” remained legal – as it will probably remain for at least another year.
Hurts and Sirianni defend “Tush Push “
Hurts didn’t think much of the discussion back in September last year: “I’m not worried about it. We’re the only ones who do it that well,” he said in a press conference after the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Head coach Nick Sirianni doesn’t care much about the criticism either: “I understand some people are complaining about it, but stop it. Stop the play. It’s not as automatic as people think. […] It’s about the guys up front. It’s about Jalen. I think we’d be pretty successful without the push, but we just push sometimes to give them that extra push.”
Only one question remains: Will Philadelphia’s parade move work without legendary center Jason Kelce, who recently ended his career?
