A series of burglaries is not only shocking stars from the NFL and NBA. It is also bringing the FBI onto the scene. The FBI is issuing a stark warning.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce (Kansas City Chiefs) have been targeted, as has Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL.
Shortly after Christmas, NBA superstar Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks also became one of the victims of organized gangs of thieves from South America who target sports stars.
According to a report by ABC News, the FBI is now warning the major U.S. sports leagues about these thieves.
The FBI report does not specifically mention the incidents mentioned, but overall there is talk of at least nine athletes being affected.
Patrick Mahomes and Co.: series of burglaries starts in September
The series of burglaries at the homes of Mahomes and Co. began in September.
“Although many burglaries occur while the residences are unoccupied, some burglaries also occur while the residents are home,” the FBI report said. ”In these cases, victims are encouraged to seek the assistance of law enforcement and avoid contact with criminals, as they may be armed or use force when confronted.”
The houses are “targeted for burglary because it is assumed that high-value goods such as designer handbags, jewelry, watches and cash may be found there,” the FBI continues.
To prepare for the burglaries, the burglars monitor their potential victims and their homes, using publicly available information and social media to identify their habits. They often already know where in a house they need to look for valuables.
The groups also use a variety of technologies to bypass alarm systems, block wireless internet connections and disable devices, cover security cameras and conceal their identities. “These preparation tactics enable theft groups to carry out break-ins in a short period of time,” the FBI report continues.
