NFL: After Altercation with Fan – Decision Made on Charges Against DK Metcalf

In December, D.K. Metcalf struck toward a fan’s face—he was suspended for two games and lost a significant amount of money as a result. Now, the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office has decided whether to file criminal charges against the receiver.

No criminal charges will be filed against D.K. Metcalf for his altercation with a fan—the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office announced on May 1.

The Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver approached a fan during the game against the Detroit Lions, briefly pulled him toward him by his T-shirt, and then struck him in the face.

The 28-year-old was suspended for two games due to the incident, causing him to forfeit $500,000 in game bonuses. Additionally, Metcalf had to forfeit an additional $45.5 million for violating contractually stipulated rules of conduct.

NFL: Prosecutors Decline to Charge Metcalf

According to a statement from the prosecutor’s office to the “Detroit Free Press,” the fan, Ryan Kennedy, “appeared to be neither injured nor did he seek medical attention during the game.”

And further: “At approximately 5:30 p.m., he reportedly left his seat holding a Metcalf jersey to get an autograph. As he approached the front railing of the stands, he said something to Mr. Metcalf. When Mr. Metcalf walked toward the stands, a brief altercation ensued in which Mr. Metcalf grabbed him by the shirt and pushed him back.”

NFL: Metcalf’s attorney plans to pursue civil action

The statement concludes: “After a comprehensive review of all relevant evidence, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has determined that no charges will be filed in this case.”

Metcalf’s attorney, Mitch Schuster, subsequently issued a statement, declaring that they “welcome the decision and are grateful for the hard work and thorough investigation that led to this just outcome.”

He added that he had decided to continue the civil battle on behalf of his client: “We are confident that justice will prevail in the civil lawsuit against Mr. Kennedy as well. As Mr. Metcalf’s counterclaim in this civil proceeding makes clear, Mr. Kennedy’s hate-driven behavior has no place anywhere, let alone in professional sports.”

Kennedy sued Metcalf and former NFL players Chad Johnson and Shannon Sharpe for “defamatory and life-altering statements.” Johnson and Sharpe are also named in the lawsuit because they had publicly suggested that Metcalf’s actions were motivated by Kennedy’s racist remarks.
