Marquette King blames discrimination for ending his NFL career

Ex-punter Marquette King has criticised the NFL. The 33-year-old believes discrimination within the NFL is the reason he is no longer getting a chance in the league

Munich – Is discrimination to blame for the end of Marquette King’s NFL career? The former Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos punter thinks so.

In several tweets, the now 33-year-old made his opinion clear: “Since 1920, only six African-American punters have played in the NFL and been credited with at least one season. The past three seasons I didn’t get a job, but I still have a top 5 average punting.”

By his own admission, he has kept quiet over the past few years in order to get another chance in the NFL. However, as this had not worked out, he would now “take matters into his own hands”. In addition, he said he has tried to pave the way for other black punters and kickers, but he doesn’t see any progress in the NFL.

King doesn’t want to end career

After five years in Oakland, King had been released in 2017. He later signed a three-year deal in Denver. However, he only appeared four times for the Broncos and was cut due to injuries. Since then, King has remained without a job in the NFL.

Despite this, he hasn’t finished his career yet. He also underlined that in the series of tweets: “I’m not ending my career, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I didn’t get another fair chance. I haven’t officially retired, I’m just not fighting to get into a league that ignores my resume, which is better than over half the punters in the NFL. “
