After 13 years in the NFL, it’s over: Jason Kelce officially announced the end of his career as a football player at an emotional press conference on Monday. “Thank you, Philadelphia, from the bottom of my heart,” Kelce said in a broken voice. The 36-year-old spent his entire career with the Philadelphia Eagles and won the Super Bowl with the team in 2017.
Several times Kelce had to pause his 45-minute speech, overwhelmed by his emotions. “It took a lot of hard work and determination to get here,” he continued, “I don’t know what’s next, but I’m excited for the new opportunities and possibilities that await me.” He will carry the experiences he had in Philadelphia with him forever, he said.
“When I stepped on the field, I felt more alive and free than ever before,” said Kelce: “Football is a feeling that no other sport can give you. I love football.” The Eagles wrote on X: “All of Philly is crying.”
Drafted in the sixth round in 2011, Kelce has been named to the Pro Bowl seven times in a season and made the Super Bowl with the Eagles last year for the second time in his career. However, he lost the duel with the Kansas City Chiefs to his brother Travis, two years his junior, who was also fighting back tears while sitting in the front row at the press conference.
