Star receiver DeAndre Hopkins is currently a free agent. It’s THE chance for all Super Bowl contenders – but Hopkins has to do his part too! One comment.
As of 10 p.m. local time on the Atlantic Coast Tuesday night, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is a free agent. The Arizona Cardinals released the superstar, who was signed to a wickedly expensive contract, after failing to find a trade partner.
Hopkins, who has been playing in the NFL for ten years and turns 31 in a few days, is one of the best in his profession. He has rushed for 700 yards or at least eight touchdowns every season – even if he has missed a few games, especially in the recent past. In six seasons he even managed to score over 1,100 yards. An absolute top star – and the missing piece of the puzzle for many a Super Bowl contender?
Yes! Hopkins would make pretty much any offence better. While he’s no longer among the fastest, there are few receivers with better hands than him.
Two top teams show interest
When the Cardinals were still trying to trade him, there were two teams in particular that showed serious interest: the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs. Especially the former should now strike if Hopkins comes their way!
Buffalo has been one of the top franchises for several years and is considered a Super Bowl favourite. In the playoffs, however, it has never quite been enough. Partly because the receiver power has been lacking. In the playoff matches of the past three years, in which the Bills were eliminated in each case, only wide receivers Gabriel Davis and Isaiah McKenzie caught touchdown passes. Hopkins, who has scored 71 touchdowns so far in his NFL career, would be the perfect addition.
The Chiefs could also use another top receiver in their corps, which currently leaves a lot to be desired in terms of star power. The current top three: Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valed-Scantling and Skyy Moore. None of those three receivers have been able to catch for over 700 yards in a season so far.
Hopkins must accommodate teams
Hopkins is the perfect match – if it weren’t for the salary cap. Both the Chiefs and Bills currently only have something around two million US dollars available.
The 19.45 million US dollars Hopkins would have earned with the Cardinals are utopian anyway! The five-time Pro Bowler, who has already earned over 100 million US dollars in his career, should forego a salary if he really wants to fulfil his big dream of winning the Super Bowl.
A sum under ten million would be rather unrealistic, but Hopkins can help teams play with the salary cap. And it’s not just for these two franchises.
For the Bills and Chiefs, he’d be the perfect fit. The other way around, too. Now, if he plays, he can really play soon – for the biggest title up for grabs!
