Colin Kaepernick and the never-ending comeback story: “In the shape of his life”

Colin Kaepernick is getting himself talked about again with a short workout clip. His never-ending comeback story, however, is likely to remain unfinished.

Munich – Things don’t necessarily automatically get better just because you keep repeating them.

Or to put it another way: just because Colin Kaepernick keeps posting a video of himself doing a workout or throwing a football, it doesn’t automatically increase his chances of returning to the field. As unfortunate as that is.

But he last stood on the pitch on 1 January 2017, more than five years ago.

Kaepernick, now 34, posted another clip Thursday, a reminder of sorts that ESPN reporter Adam Schefter recorded and fed with info from an unnamed source.

“In the shape of his life “

Kaepernick is “in the shape of his life”, the source is quoted as saying. “He wants to play. He’s ready and a great piece of the puzzle for teams still looking for a QB to win a Super Bowl.”

Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett was impressed, tweeting, “Never give up bro. Keep chasing your dreams. “

Of course the timing is no coincidence, so close to the start of Free Agency, amidst the crazy quarterback trades and moves. The quarterback class in the draft also has few top players to offer.

And since it’s no secret that many teams could use an experienced playmaker, the situation is so dynamic that quarterbacks who have actually already been written off, such as Mitch Trubisky or Marcus Mariota, can suddenly hope for a starter’s spot.

Kaepernick too? At least for a chance?

He has achieved one goal: He is back in the headlines, US media are already speculating which team he could fit in with. These shenanigans are part and parcel of an offseason. And of course, theoretically, he fits in with any team that needs a quarterback.

But shape of life or not: Nobody knows how he will do under competitive conditions. After a five-year break, even a player like Kaepernick is a complete surprise package. And will remain so for the most part even after a trial training session.

I guess that ship has sailed

However, there is no question: after Kaepernick’s backstory with his kneeling as an anthem protest, the dispute with the NFL, the booting and non-consideration and the subsequent rapprochement in the past years, a “happy ending” would certainly be a nice story.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t make it any more realistic. For the ship has probably sailed.

“For Colin Kaepernick, it’s over. No team is going to sign him at this point, not after he hasn’t played football in half a decade,” Mike Florio of “Pro Football Talk” sums it up.

There were plenty of opportunities

Because there have been plenty of opportunities to sign Kaepernick in recent years, the golden bridges built have been huge, the opportunities favorable for teams, both athletically and politically. That speculation during this time has not even reached the status of a half-baked rumour is telling.

If a franchise had felt Kaepernick would help the team move forward, they probably would have signed him. A clear indication that his video reminder is likely to stick. As unfortunate as that is.
