Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy could be selected in the first round of the 2024 draft. One NFL scout is reportedly drawing comparisons to Bengals star Joe Burrow
The 2024 draft is getting closer and closer, at the end of April the 32 NFL teams will once again be able to select the best college talent.
This includes J.J. McCarthy, who started at quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines the past two years and was crowned college champion with his team last season.
Among experts, McCarthy is not among the first tier of playmakers, but can often be found as a late first-round pick in mock drafts. An opinion that is apparently shared by an unnamed NFL scout.
As an “ESPN” reporter told the “Matt Barrie Show”, this scout compared the 21-year-old to one of the best NFL quarterbacks: “J.J. McCarthy would be Joe Burrow if he played for a team that throws the ball.”
It goes on to say, “J.J. McCarthy is beloved in the scouting community. He’s tough as hell. He’s got a strong arm, he’s a very good athlete and he’s good to coach. “

McCarthy is also said to be highly favored by a general manager of an NFC team. “McCarthy may not do much at Michigan, but he’s so gritty and tough. He has so much grit, he doesn’t get down. And he’s a much better all-around passer than he’s given credit for,” he is quoted as saying.
The Wolverines ran the run game a lot last season, but McCarthy’s numbers are still impressive. In 15 games, he threw for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns with just four interceptions, while his completion percentage of 72.3 percent was also very impressive.
