Aaron Donald talks about career end: “I would be at peace with myself”

The rumours about Aaron Donald ending his career persist. The defensive tackle has now spoken out on the matter and continues to leave his future open.

Munich/Los Angeles – Before the Super Bowl between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals, rumours arose that Aaron Donald would end his career if he won. So far, however, the Rams defensive tackle has not announced his retirement. Will that still happen?

In an interview for the “I Am Athlete” podcast with former NFL pro Brandon Marshall, the 31-year-old opened up about his motivations. “I was talking about retirement long before we won a Super Bowl. I had said at the time that since I came into the league, I’d played eight years and I’d probably be done,” he says.

“Then that came out and everybody was like, ‘Oh, he said if he wins a Super Bowl, he’s going to retire.’ I had said I’d probably be done with football when I’d played eight years. But when you win a Super Bowl, you get a bit addicted to it. I’m being completely honest. I want to feel that again. That experience is like no other.”

Still, he continues to leave his future open: “If I keep playing, it’s to win another Super Bowl. But at the end of the day, it’s still a business and it has to make sense for me and my family.” In the interview, he mentioned four times that he was “at peace” with his career.

“It’s not about the money, but it is a business “

Although Donald’s six-year contract, worth a total of $122 million, runs up to and including the 2024 season, it reportedly includes an opt-out option after the past season. Donald could seek a new contract or continue to consider ending his career.

“It’s not about the money, but it’s a business at the end of the day,” Donald said. “For me, it’s about winning. I don’t want to play football if I can’t win anyway. So if I feel like I have a chance to win another Super Bowl, then it makes sense to play. But like I said, it’s still a business. We have to take care of the business aspects.” And if that doesn’t happen? “I’ll still be fine,” he said.

“I don’t have to play football to be at peace with myself. I’ll be fine. I was blessed to play this game and make the money I made. If I can win another Super Bowl, that’s great. But if not, I’d be at peace with myself too. “
